Exclamation Just got back from Compusa!

OMG they sell The New Plextor's at my store! The 40x model I also checked out their CPU's AND OMG they have the Amd XP 1800+ and the XP 1700+ Which comes in plastic cover type... And they got a Ausus mobo... I keep forgetting the model...but it's a Red box... If that helps... The Amd Xp 1800 was $226 i think... Anyway lol I had to stop and look at the Geforce 4's lol the Ti 4600 that is:-D

I have that 40x12x40 Plextor drive in my grubby little hands for about 6 more weeks...

Then I need to buy it or send it back.

I should have a review up on it next weekend though... :-D

That's exactly what will happen, it will "underclock" it until it understands how to properly talk to the cpu with the bios flash.

it only burns audio cds at 24x, which is 80% of my burning (demos for my musical endeavors), so I decided to stay with my current 24x plextor. I'm looking at dvd burning now that the online prices are dropping to realistic ranges...

Did the thing actually burn data at 40x or is that the max it burns on inner tracks and only get a 28x average?

From the little I have played with the Plextor 401240 it seems that the inner tracks DAE is around 20X and the outer hits 40X. So it doesnt seem to bad...

As far as burn times... can you say full 685 meg DIVX file in 3:05...

It is getting to the point of ludicrous speeds folks...

3 minutes on an Imation 16x rated disc is pretty damn fast. The big question i am wondering is how many drives will actually read these discs. I'm sure the more expensive CDROM drives will but what about the POS drives they use for OEM machines?

If it's using the justlink/burnproof it should readon them all I'd think. Got my numbers reversed, but that 20x inner and 40x outer sounds about right for that drive (putting it at +/- 30x), mine does +/- 20x. I'd say the faster they get the less thay are truly "fast"... 20x real life performance on a 24x max burner is better than 30x real life with a 40x max burner...

24x burner 83% of max

40x burner 75% of max

I've seen/heard similar figures elsewhere. The envelope for this technology is being pushed nowadays... it's only a matter of time until this speed DVD is commonplace .
