New PC, Ok?

I've got to spec up a new PC for my parents. It's got to be futureproof for at least 4 years, so no Semprons here, I'm sticking to 939 Athlons.

It cannot cost more than £370. It must have 1GB of Ram, a DVD-re/writer, Motherboard, CPU, Case, PSU and hard drive.

Any suggestions? Oh - and I will only be buying off ebuyer.

You aren't going to get "future proof" for £370.

Because, £370 buys entry level now. So in 4 years, it won't be up to much anymore.

^all IMHO

But if you go socket 939, then the memroy, CPU and graphics are all upgradeable for quite a while yet.

Yeah well if it's just for your parents then you can get a cheap GFX card. The socket 939 processor will be upgradable for quite a while to come. I'm sure you can get a decent pc for £370 or maybe less.

Sure you can. My dad still uses a PII laptop on a daily basis.

I took future proof to mean, being able to run windows 2010 without any further upgrades. But if you don't want to run the latest software, then you can keep on using your P1 with windows 95. Provided you have a decent firewall/AV

Nice work Favu. That system should be future proof for at least a few years.
