Sadly Dells are very rarely dual core. In fact, they are very rarely much snuff at all, with most still shipping with older Prescott cores or Celerons. In white box circles, the Celeron is still the lifeblood of the el-cheapo sector, and the budget notebook world revolves around the Celeron-M and cheaper, non-centrino Pentium M single cores (Dothan).

The Semprons are also selling rather well.

My brain is dual-core, i have a split personality.

"hey you, get off my computer and step away slowly".

I beg to differ.
I just got myself a dell notebook,
15" widescreen
Yonah dual core.
1.5gigs of memory.

Under $700.

The price was only $600 but I added a gig o ram myself.

The E1505 is a real bargain with real performance.

Yours is the exception, not the rule however. Dell's bread and butter is the low end P4/Celeron build for peanuts.

That's the thing with dell, they make computers for the computer illiterate, i say they can keep there plastic boxes. Now us, the whole AOA family, we are OEM builders as most of us have built our own PC from scratch. We choose what we want, exactly how we want it, and when we want it, not told what to do or where to go. That's the AOA family, a living, breathing family of Overclocking specialists.

Dell make computers for those who either don't want to know about the technology, don't care about the technology, or simply don't have time to worry about technology. (And corporates, although I don't know how long Dell guarantee a model will exist for)

That's a huge number of people!

This is correct.

I used to buy Thinkpads and Toshi's. But the fact is, if I wanted a computer as good as the one I have, with the same specs, a metal shell, 5 brand new high capacity batteries, rodents, leather bag, windows licence etc, it would cost me almost twice as much in a Toshi or Thinkpad as it would in a Dell.

There is a point you have to accept that Toshi's and Thinkpads are great laptops, but a laptop is going to get trodden on, kicked, dropped, scratched to hell, possibly stolen and cracked.

This Dell is everything I want, fast, strong as hell, extreme battery life at 4 hours per battery, reliable (I checked the model up on forums, and its the most reliable Dell model ever made in every way, ... while nearly every other Dell has problems), and cheap.

Its a 13", weighs 1.3KG, and runs Fedora Core. What more could you want lol?

In 3 years, your top end laptop is worthless anyway, so I just never want to go that route again when theres a cheaper laptop.

Basically, Dell laptops are the Volkswagon Golf TDI of the computer world.

I second that, my Inspiron is great for the money, does everything I need it to and a bit more. They dont like being banged too much though.

@dsio. ditto.

If you know what you are looking for, dell does provide exceptional value. I don't think any others are offering a dual core notebook with decent video under $700, or anywhere near that.

I suspect in six months there will be a lot of enthusiasts buying dell tho.

I've recently upgraded to a duel core 4400mhz from a 3700mhz 64 Athlon and I can't tell any difference. Possibly there's less slowdown when multi tasking but nothing to write home about.
It might change in the future when they write stuff to take advantage of 2 cores but for now, not that impressed.

Dell saved me from Compaq, I'll always have a warm spot in my heart for them because of it!

A noob can do FAR worse than Dell when just starting out and clueless. But my experience of them is dated as I started building my own about 8 or 9 years ago.

Haven't needed a lappy as yet...
