What kind of PSU are you running? Have you checked the voltages with a real meter?

it's still the cheapo job that came with the case

you guys seem to obsess about PSUs - I should pay attention sometime

seriously tho, they're so damn expensive! especially if you consider it against having to save up for a new GPU to get off the "bottom rung" 5200 i'm running...

In days of old the PSU was the last thing on the list, an after thought really. No longer, I now buy the power supply for a new system before I buy any other components. Yes, they are expensive. A bad power supply can wreck a mainboard and the components on it, it's easier on the wallet when you look at it that way. Not to mention the cornucopia of hard to diagnose problems that a marginal PSU can present to you.

How expensive is a good PSU after you've replaced 3 sound cards because of the crap one you have?

Not saying that the PSU actually IS the culprit, but it is certainly where I'd start looking, and a good PSU is ALWAYS a solid investment for a computer. If you can't get good power, it doesn't matter WHAT you've got for CPU, video, and RAM.

excellant point. as I have two 500W psu's that are not able to deliver
advertised wattage. the 5V rail is 4.6 on one. the other, 1.6 on the 3.
they are PowMax and they suck. most of my machines run on Enermax,
some on Enlite.
