Burning DVD Data Discs

Just needed some input on this matter.

The Problem: When burning large DVD Data discs, for example backing up My Documents, that like fill up the entire disc, half the data on the disc doesnt seem to work. No scratches, none what so ever. ANother example, burning large amounts of AVI files, half dont work, and trying to copy them results in Cyclic Redundancy errors... I've tried to structure the DVD into Folders, still no better, same problem of reading files.

Any solutions? Changing File System? (Current ISO 9660 + Juliet) Change Discs?, i've tried both + and -, no difference.

Thnx!

If half the data never works, I would suspect HW. Is it always the second half?

What Burner are you using?
What disks are you burning?
What burn speed are you using?

There is a tremendous range of quality in disks, and different burners like some disks but not others.

i'd try burning at slower speed, as mentioned, as well as a different brand of disk. had somewhat similar issues...changed media, now every disk is a keeper.

Most manufactures have a list of medium they approve for their drive. I really don't know if that just PR or a valid recommendation.

It would be helpful if you could post the drive type and disk size so we can compare out own kit but if you're using single layer (4.7gb) on different media (TDK, Verbatim, Maxell) then I'm afraid it looks like a duff drive.

Very true, there are different write strategies for different MIDs (Media ID codes.)

Also, while normally sound advice, slowing writing speed is not 100% effective. For older media, this is true, but with some of the 16x highend stuff, there is no net gain from going below 12x... again this is drive dependent.

This is why I stick with the the better stuff only, verbatim & Taiyo Yuden.
