How broadband made me less than half, then whole!

Written by Daniel
Thursday, 17 August 2006

I recently moved house and for nearly a year I've been miffed at my cable provider...OK I still am, but now it isn't because I'm not getting the 6000 kbps download speeds they advertise, but do not promise!

I had conversations, I had a service guy come out and check the lines and measure every connection. The upshot of it all was that "They" were delivering the bandwidth, I was just basically,... unworthy to receive!

The couldn't tell me why if it was there, I wasn't getting it. AND I wasn't getting it as measured by the very speed test site they use to prove themselves honest. Lot's of sighing and sympathy mind you, but mine seem to them an isolated occurrence... and after all what God denies, no man can restore! ":O}

I am also on 6MBS and I never see the full speed. I think we get to share with others. I am not very good at sharing....

I had this back when I lived with Natalie (faceless wonder) I commented one day on how crappy the the TV signal was. Turns out.. it was VERY old wireling in the house. I ended up going up into the attic and running a new line and then hook that line into a new splitter. GOD the signal was SOOOO much better!!! but still NOT good enough to get our high speed cable. After putting a booster on the line (which just about made the TV look like a DVD) ever thing was fine and we could run a cable modem.

HTH someone!!!

I'd like to thank you for reading my piece, but I'm late and there's a Java applet with my name on it!

I would actually be interested to hear if any of you tried and benifited from the good DR TCP.

Me? I'd rather have bandwidth than a new CPU! Which is very good as there is no new CPU on the horizon, but I just got a rocket ship full of bandwidth! ":O}

So tell us how you do with this, could make a difference...":O}

I tried it on my machine sometime back, and it didn't make any difference for me. I'm pulling about 120KB/S on my DSL, which is a 150KB/S line.

My upload is capped pretty low. Can't remember what it is. I think they do this to keep you from running a big file server or FTP from your house...

Dan, I did the tweak and saw a little improvement. They, you know the all doing they, are upgrading my service so it has been a little hit and miss lately. Maybe after it is done I can get some real numbers....

I have a question. My provider says i am supposed to have a DL speed of 4megs, and i know i am not even close to that. Using the broadband speed test i score like 1487 down speed, which sucks. My cable modem is a few years old, could that make a difference? Also, i am hooked to the web througha network router, could that make it slower? I am trying to figure out ways to get the bandwidth i am supposed to have.

It may depend on your network infrastructure. I'm currently using a 10/100 mbit ethernet router doing DHCP. However according to my ISP I should be getting at least 1500kb/s out of my cable connection and given the fact that the router is able to handle 100 mbit connections that should be no prob at all. However nothing is further from the truth. When I disable DHCP on my router and use it as a switch I'm able to use the full speed of my connection. If I set it to regulate internal DHCP I won't be able to go much faster than 800kb/s. That's very strange so I probably think my point is to check the internal network components for any weakness. It might as well be something you least suspect.
