Display power consumption

CNet has a guide comparing the power consumption of several different display technologies: CRT, LCD, and Plasma. While the guide measures the power consumption of TV sets, the same rules apply to monitors, and you might be surprised by the results.

I'm a little concerned about the measurement techniques they used, given that their methodology indicates they're measuring apparent power rather than real power.

True, but since most of those sets are designed to be sold worldwide with minimal changes, it is likely they include PFC circuitry, making their real power close enough to their apparent power that it shouldn't upset the measurements significantly.

One thing that annoys me, however, it the fact that they didn't post the actual numbers for power consumption. They also mention that they set the units to 60 foot-lamberts with a gray bedsheet (except for those units that couldn't reach that output level). Since the rear projection units cannot generally get as bright as the other types of displays, and since they are noted as generally have better power efficiency than the other types of display, one has to wonder what their power efficiency would look like at equivalent brightness levels.
