AI processing unit anyone?

Hey,

A few days ago a link about a new AI processor has come to my attention.

http://www.aiseek.com/Intia.html

After the physics processor a new development in processing is around the corner. The AI processor.

I waited a while before posting this link. The site has a few tech demos to show off their future product. Those tech demos have been unavailable for a while but that's been fixed now.

The strenght of this piece of future hardware seems to be its ability to steer AI units through dynamic environments without using very complex algorithms made by the game developer. Which is rather important as a lot of future 3D games will be using dynamic environments. Everybody can understand how hard it is to program AI units to interact with moveable scenery.

The blokes at aiseek.com claim to be able to handle AI checks a whole lot faster than currently possible using a different and roughly more simple method, eliminating several problems currently encountered by game developers.

It's no real use for me to explain all this as their site provides a lot of info. Not very technical but clear none the less. Illustrated by the tech demos.

I'm impressed

So what's next, a decal processing unit?

By the looks of it, raw CPU power will become less and less important, depending on which kind of application the future PC will be running.

How long before this gets done on GPUs as well?

And how much longer before a decent game supports / requires either of them?

I think it would be great if the industry would move to GPU's that handle less work, like having the option to offload specific tasks to something like Ageia's PhysX proc for instance, and the above AI proc idea - w/o added latencies.

Then we could build more specifically for needs, while perhaps saving $$, heat, and space on the GPU card, and actually using more of those empty PCI slots.

OK, well at least the theory sounds good...

How long until the CPU effectively disappears. And we will just have like 8 slots on the motherboard....a GPU, a Desktop PU, a Misc PU, a Physics PU, an AI PU......etc etc

I think total support will arrive after total integration into the GPU...Who can afford three or four graphic cards to properly implement a game?

How long before we have an all in one GPU, AIPU, PPU, and VPU (volume Processing Unit, for volumetric cloud and things).
