AGP 4x vs 8x

I'm sure this is an old question and I didn't have time to search through 50 pages of forum threads, and I like talkin to you guys...

lets say I'm running a 9600pro on a motherboard that only has a 4x mode at 1.5v AGP bus protocol...
The Radeon 9800pro runs at 4x/8x but won't the motherboard bottleneck at the bus?
Will this cut my speeds in half?
here is the motherboard

Running an 4/8x card on a 4x slot will have very little impact unles it is a high end card, running a 6600gt AGP in a 4x slot has around 5-10% impact on performance compared to the same card in an 8x motherboard.

Using a high end AGP card (7800/7900) however may be a different question all together.

Thanks for the response.
I'm helping a family member to upgrade his Dell OptiPlex™ GX260
because he wants to play the new Microsoft Flight Simulator X.
Well, he's running into some problems because that game requires a lot of hard-drive space and his dell doesn't have a video card at all.
Of course he's on a budget too.
So I was recommending the Sapphire Radeon 9600pro because I have bought 2 of those from newegg.com and they are great. They run Doom 3 and FEAR.
And they are only $60.
I think I'll download the flight simulator demo and see if it runs on my 9600pro.
Anyways, I was worried about 9600pro loosing potential because of the
4x speed AGP bus.

MSFS-X is a bit of a graphics hog, I really think the 9600pro will struggle badly.

Do you have an suggestions for an older motherboard?
I'm thinking the newer AGP Radeon X850pro are too high end and will bottleneck...

X850pro

What exactly does the 4x AGP bus differ compared to the 8x AGP bus?
does it limmit the core clocking speeds, pixel pipelines?

Would the 9800pro be any better?
9800pro

FSX is very very demanding, even on my system.

With regards to AGP version, it's simply represents the bandwidth availible to the card.

I played the Flight Simulator X demo last night on my
Pentium 4 2.6 GHz 533fsb
1 Gig RAM
9600pro 256Mb RAM

and it ran well. I didn't try upping the graphics but I could fly in
weather conditions like rain or snow and I had a decent frame rate so that I could fly smoothly and feel the helicopter shake when the wind hits it.
The land textures were very low and there was a small amount of trees and houses, but still playable.
Thanks for the tips everyone

Try a 9800Pro if you can find them.

Be interested to hear the results on the Dell - wouldn't work on my wife's dell box as the gfx card socket never got put on the board - I can see the solder pads where it would have gone

My theory on the slot is that the memory integrated on the card is the important memory - anything like textures swapped out to main memory seems to slow things down whatever the AGP speed.

I am still running AGP 8X, using a 6800LE unlocked and overclocked, and i can run any game at relatively high settings with no problems at all. Look into getting a 6800 card, you can get them pretty cheap these days and they are great cards in my opinion, although i think they stopped making the LE model.

Well my brother-in-law decided to go with a new computer.
So I searched newegg.com for a bunch of hardware.
I gave him the options of an upgrade for his Dell
or a supercomputer.
He went with the supercomputer.
Now I am modding an old case and about to install all the new hardware.

I'm taking pictures as I go.
I found from othe modders, that making a work log with pics really shows all the work I did.
And answers questions before they are asked.
I'll have em up by this weekend.

I went with the MSI K8N Neo4-F
But interestingly when I got it, printed on the board is
K8N Neo4-H.
I've done some searching and I can't find it anywhere.
wierd....

Same board as me! it does not like having the heatsink retainer prised off with a spatula BTW.

Also the "H" means that it uses the NF4 Ultra chipset, mine has the standard NF4.

Cool, how long have you had it?
I just got it to boot up last night.
no problems so far................

I read on newegg.com that many people had problems with the chipset heatsink & fan dying on them.
I also noticed that the X850pro is right over it too.
So replacing it will be a job-and-a-half.

My fan has been running fine with no issues, I have had very few problems with it to be honest and its got a half-decent set of options in the BIOS, only thing I found is that removing the backplate to the CPU heatsink retainer is near enough impossible as it is glued to the board.

they must have changed that because I took it off last night to put on a Zalman heatsink & fan.
I didn't have any problems.

damn you lol, I had to take the backplate off with a spatula removing one of the SMC from behind the CPU...still works but has hampered stability a touch.
