A tale of two Power Supplies....
Hi guys (especially Dan, Adean, gizmo, pitch and cad!),
Hope everybody has a great New Year 2007! Full time duties on another forum have pretty much monopolized my time.


I have had a chance to get my hands on two contrasting PSU's. Astec's custom built TEC power unit. Looks pretty solid. Full of UCC/NCC and Nichion caps.

And then this crapola of a unit, which needs some recapping done to it.
Guess which unit we have here?

For about $30, I hope to have a much more reliable unit. I cannot for the life of me understand how 105 C rated capacitors fail in a few months in a modestly powered Socket-A rig? ll the Fujhyyu caps on the secondary side are bulging. A friend of mine was about to throw it away and luckily, he decided to show it to me before he smashed it up. If this recap turns out well, I'll probably be several units to recap. My only concern is that I may not be able to replace all the secondary side caps. Some are hard to reach.

This is my list of new caps (being purchased from digikey):-

I'm still waiting for digikey to ship out my parts. It should get here this week. Once I recap it, I plan to test it on an old Skt-A board before I send it off to JonnyGURU. Hopefully, he'll test it for me by putting it through the whinger.

Antec are reportedly moving away from CWT onto Seasonic. But Antec being Antec are still cheaping out on the caps. The newer Trio's use Seasonic as their OEM, but they use Teapo caps. Teapo's are not bad, but my personal preference would be Chemicon, Hitachi or Panasonic for PSU's.

Not sure who OEM's for Astek. I couldn't find any special markings on the PCB, so it may be an in-house build.

I have come across a couple Astec brand PSUs in taking apart or rebuilding older OEM computers, and they have struck me as being quality psus. Aside from still working after 10+ years, the internals did seem very solidly designed with caps that seemed in mint condition.

Astec is probably owned by Emerson Electric, a top notch maker of UPS units. Emerson bought out Liebert in 2000-2001 another top quality Industrial vendor. My mom worked at Liebert/Emerson and I've seen the innards of some of their units. They seem to be of rather high quality. All Japanese caps.
