HDD sizes about to get silly?

Toms Hardware reports on Fujitsu's plans for massive storage on a standard 3.5" drives.

Fujitsu paves way to 5 TB hard drives.

Sunnyvale (CA) - Fujitsu claims that it has developed a key technology that would allow the company to quintuple today's highest commercial storage densities in hard disk media. If researchers will be able to transfer the technology into commercial products, we could see 5 TB desktop drives and 1.5 TB notebook drives in the not too distant future.

A truly amazing amount of storage. Truly it boggles the mind, especially when I think back to when I used to think 250MB drive was big!! (how little I knew then!!)

That's awesome!~

Seriously, I run out of hard drive space in an instant. It takes me the top side of 2 weeks to use 500GB. Which means I end up deleting random files and stuff to keep up with my usage demand. =(

But yay, 5TB!~ How much, how much?

I'm old enough to remember when for 512k and you were talking about a ferrite core drum. Hard drives remind me somewhat of wind up gramophones - they work but I'm not convinced that the mechanical gubbins are the right answer.

The days of mechanical gubbins are numbered.

There are all kinds of advances taking place in solid state storage.

Once, we have solid state storage devices which are fast and affordable, who will want a clunky hard drive?

I happen to like my 'clunky hard drive' thankyou.

But 2 weeks to use 500GB! WTF do you use it all for, porn?!?! Or have you really downloaded the whole internet?

I have about 60Gb left on this 160Gb SATA drive i bought about 4 months ago. It's mostly games (in fact, i bought it just for games) I am considering just buying a really big HDD when this one runs out of space. 500Gb should do fine and when i do get round to that time, prices will probably have dropped a lot.

But 5TB! I bet it's gonna have awesome seek times are be really quiet...not!

Hard drives will be around for a very long time, simply for bulk storage, just as tape has continued to survive for archival purposes.

My brother downloads the whole internet, and then slaps it all on my hard drives. =/

But yeah, I need any excuse to leave my PC on 24/7. Apart from folding, I tend to download anything I can find.

I even downloaded a PDF on 'How to naturally increase your height by 2-3 inches within 7 weeks'.

Yes, people. Height. Nothing else.

Pervs.

Does that, by any chance, involve hanging upside down with weights on your head or something?

What else would I want to increase in height? My hair? Hair spray or gel works for that.

I tend to agree for storage purposes. Still instant on OSen from a solid state drive would be pretty cool...

AFAIK there is a 32gb Solid state laptop HDD on the market already, and it's being used in some UMPCs, so I wouldn't say it's too costly, and it's getting cheaper at an astonishing rate!
