We've had some other stories about Quantum computing here and here. The outfit in the second link actually planned to show a computer at the January CES about a year ago, but that kinda fell through, IIRC.

These D-Wave guys seem confident, will be interesting to see how this one unfolds... or folds (f@h)?

I just hope they don't tear a hole in space or something crazy like that.

Folding...That would absolutely work...

I remember the second one, I think I called it a load of vapourware nonesense

The problem with things like this is there is always someone with enough money and not enough education who get sold on 'the next big thing'

I still don't understand what "quantum" computing is. Does that make me a perfect target for these marketeers?

I think there must have been a downsizing in what a Q computer is?

Last I heard, many years ago in fact, it would use every atom in the multiversity to compute.

In fact unless I remember very wrongly, the main reason they were interested in it at the time was that if it worked it would prove the existence or non-existence of the Multiverse.

Now someone tell how badly I've remembered this! ":O}

Once you have worked it out, please do explain it to me.

It's not something which can be easily explained in short.

From reading up a little, I can safely say it makes current supercomputers look like childs toys.

Apparently, these people have solved the problem where by looking at the computer in the wrong way would cause it to malfunction. So, a non-paranoid quantum computer.

The thing about quantum mechanics is the experts don't understand it either

Yess.... Still clear as mud, I'm sorry to say. Wonder if this D-Wave thing harnesses "several dozen" qubits?

I think the Inq has worked it all out:

Quote:
Boffins wonder if the outfit has really got a Quantum computer to sell as they were not really expecting to see one for another 20 years. Still you get temporal distortions when you mess around with parallel universes, and the machine has probably invented itself in the future and sent itself back through time.

At last an explanation strange enough to fit my memory of it! ":O}

If this were to be true there would me much more fuss around it.
One quantum computer could then in theory crack every security protocol used in the world in a matter of seconds.

Needless to say, I don't buy it

Not even if it's on sale at really really low price? We could chip in, maybe borrow some money from AP's girl friend?

Yeah...we could do an advertising blitz "The new, improved Quantum AOA Forums!!" But then we'd have to deal with Ph.D.'s all the time. Which brings the old chestnut to mind "If ya can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle 'em with BS."

Maybe it's too early to say with confidence, yet today's Front Page item is MIGHTY interesting. The thing sure looks futuristic, not to mention scary. I think that's real gold on that scary looking mohuncher. Thanks very much for pulling these news items our way, danrok!

You may have noticed their website is no longer just a couple of pages:
http://www.dwavesys.com/

So far, it looks as though they have been successful...
