Anyone want to guess how many of which body parts have been so re-created?

They are so cool! They carve a form out of a soft material. As it is digitally guided a person can e-mail the spec to the machine of an object and it will carve an exact copy of it within the machine. It's a bit more complex than I've stated (understatement).

Poor description I know....sigh.":O}

SLI was where it all started I believe. (Stereo lithography I think)

Used lasers and a liquid material. We sent stuff off all the time to get quick engineering samples.

I know that the US military has been doing research with 3D printers. Why? Well, getting hold of spare parts isn't easy. How much easier would it be to be able to print the spare part you needed rather than having to order it and hope it comes in safely?

Dan: Some of the machines don't carve. They deposit material, like a ceramic or plastic instead. They can build up some intricate forms - for areas that need support, they can also deposit a support material that is removed once the shape has been produced.

Thanks A! I realized half way though that I had mixed two methods in my mind. Have seen Demo's of both far apart in timing and...well I just got confused! ":O}
