That's PCWorld magazine for those confused with a certain chain of stores.

I'd have to add my 1980s Hyundai 386 (yes, they made computers). If anyone has ever had the misfortune of sitting in a 1980s Hyundai (the korean answer to the ford pinto), you can imagine what their computers were like.

The EGA monitor produced quite nice colors, after the manditory 3 hour warmup (30 minutes from new I was told, and an hour when it was only a year old).

The 30 pin SIMMs didn't actually clip into place. Rather, they all laid on their side, at about a 30 degree angle to the motherboard, and each SIMM would hold its neighbour in place, by pressing against it sideways, and the 8th stick had a plastic clip (removable thing sort of like a zip tie) that clamped the 8th stick down so it wouldnt pop loose.

So if you upgraded, and went to the maximum of 4X4MB sticks instead of the factory 8X0.5MB, you had to wedge some folded up paper behind the last of them to hold it in place.

The idea of not bothering with a front mounted power switch, and instead making you reach around and physically switch the power supply on at the back was also a brilliant effort.

Korean engineering at its finest.

I think I remember some PB computers had that same memory setup. I can't tell you how many PB machines I have trashed over the years.

I would have added AP's A64 rig really, since he had so many problems with that, and AFAIK, it never got fixed. Luckily he has a new rig now! hooray!!

A friend presented me with a used Hyundai 386, it was my first computer. Contrary to dsio's experience, I thought it was a well made and trouble free machine. I remember buying 4 4Mb 30-pin DIMMS for it. Those little DIMMS were problematic, but what do you want for wait for it...$100. Yes, really. I worked on an ancient Packard Swell 486 once. It was a joy, needed band aids after that one.

They should add AST to the list as well.

Had one of their AST P60s at one point. Was one of those stupid 'desktop' cases that has a PCI riser card and the cards sit horizontally, except there wasn't enough room.

For a bloody small computer though, they must have used a hell of a lot of plate iron in it. The lid off the case was as heavy as the monitor was.
