Makes sense to me, vertical integration and all. Does this Komag joint sell platters, or just the coating for the platters?

They manufacture the media, which is generally the platter and the coating. Presumably they buy the coating from somewhere else, as I gather making the coating is a rather complex process in itself. They manufacture the platter and coat it, then sell the end product of THAT process to someone else who puts it into a functioning drive.

WD having their own media manufacturing capability AND their own r/w head manufacturing capability will give them the ability to make closely matched head/media systems for optimum performance at minimum cost (or at least, that would be my guess).

Somehow, I thought making and putting the "goop" onto platters wasn't simple. Thanks!
