Unde-fragable.

Dear Sirs and Madams,
during my weekly checkdisc and defrag, I saw a 3/4" wide red band in the little defrag window. After two attempts, the booger is still there. Whut shud I do about this? Signed,
Perplexed in Seattle

What percentage of your disk is free space, and how much of that is contiguous?

Windows Defragger is pretty stupid, and has problems defragging files once the free space gets below about 30%, PARTICULARLY if the free space isn't in one big chunk on the drive.

I use Diskeeper Pro to keep my system defragged, and it does a pretty good job, but it costs money (I think it's like $50).

If you want to look into free defraggers, you can try this page. I don't have any experience with these tools, though.

Thanks for the reply, Gizmo. 16.1 Gb used, 21.1 Gb free space. There was a nice patch of contiguous free space before Mr Red Bar showed up. I don't think I'll use any free utility, uglyware lurks in everything, or almost everything "free" nowadays. Diskeeper Pro, eh? Funny, I ordered a new HDD after discovering this nastiness. Large HDD's are cheap in modern times.

I have and use it.
I find while it defrags files it doesn't really consolidate free space.

No malware found to date (9 months of use)

Thanks, noob. Maybe XP can consolidate after a third party defragger does what the OS's defrag prog can't accomplish? And WTH can't XP's own defrag fix the 3/4 inch wide red block?

depends if something is using it. If a program still 'owns' it, the xp defragger wont touch it

Xp defragger is really a cut version of another defragger, I think it may be the roxio defragger, but I'm not sure.

Windows 2000 defragger is a stripped-doiwn version of Diskeeper. I would expect the same is true of WindowsXP.
