Power consumption per computational unit has dropped in the past six years by 80%, but at-the-plug consumption has still risen by a factor of 3.4, according to the Uptime Institute.

Similar situation to most things, like motoring, aviation, etc.

They all use less energy these days, but there's a heck of a lot more of them, and counting.

And my company is writing a complete new software package that is based on the idea of 'Use twice as much hardware to do the same amount of work as we used to do, and then add even more features to increase the hardware requirements even further'.
