Got 200 Blu-ray discs? Stick 'em here!

There are a lot of products out there that seem awesome in theory but don't always deliver in reality. The Sony HES-V1000 Home Entertainment Server is one of them.

Why would it have DRM on it? It doesn't rip from DVD/Bluray.

I assumed with a 500GB HDD on board, it would do exactly that.

One would hope. It has potential, but at that price, it falls a little short on features.

Are there even 200 Blu-ray titles out? How many of them are worth owning?

Er, yeah, there's considerably more than 200 Blu-ray titles out. As always, how worthwhile they are for owning depends on your tastes.

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't the copyright laws alloy you to back up your own media?

Bluray and HD-DVD both have a 'fair-use' provision that allows for personal copying. However, it does rather depend on which country you are in - not all countries provide any provision for backing up such a disc.

I am just curious here. Would there be a way to "modify" this unit to store your Blu-Ray collection to the HDD and still be within the copyright laws.

Well, technically it'd be possible. How much effort it would take is another thing entirely!
