No mention of possible price tags as yet I guess... this could give rise to the "My hardrive is bigger than your Dad" syndrome

I tried to explain this to my wife and I got the blank stare and the " all I hear is bla bla bla" speech....

It would take 3 weeks to format.

Rather than increasing storage capacities, this technology could be used to improve the access times and data transfer rates of existing drives.

Consider, if you can store 5 times as much data in the same amount of space, you can also store the same amount of data in 1/5 the space. Reducing the amount of space means you can make smaller drives, which means you can get to the same amount of data more quickly. In addition, if you keep the rotational velocity the same but increase the density, you also increase the transfer speed. However, by being able to use smaller platters for the same amount of storage, you now gain the ability to make the platters spin even faster without trying to fly apart, gaining even MORE speed and reducing latency even more (the amount of time it takes the platter to rotate under the head is a significant factor in how long it takes to retrieve data).

This development could make things interesting for flash storage, which is still more expensive than magnetic, and is only now beginning to approach the speed of hard drives.

I want 1, or maybe 2. Just to make sure I don't run out of space.

Or something better..don't much need space, but speed is always nice.
