time???

Should it take about 1.5-2 hours to format a 40 gig drive? I just got a Segate BaracudaIV, it's 7200 spin, ata 100, 40 gig, and I've been formatting it for at least an hour now and it's only 54% done. Is that right?

It took an hour 40 but all seems to be running solid and stable. But I've yet to install most of the things I want.

I was thinking later on that maybe it was running ATA33 which would make a big difference.

Nope, ATA100. Sandra gave me a 10% higher rating than the benchmark 30gig ATA100, which is in line with my mild fsb overclock. Its all good now.

I got this error and then everything running in the background shutdown on me. I've had a few crashes since installing last night. Previously I'd have one a month if that. The only thing I can think that's different (other than a different hard drive) is that I installed the drivers that came with my video card and then installed the detonators over top (without de-installing the first set) and I'm using the 4in1's that came with the motherboard instead of newer ones.

Memory is the first that comes to mind, then the 4-in-1 drivers...

Just after posting that I updated from the 4.24 4in1's that come with my motherboard cd to 4.34. No trouble yet but I've not taxed the system. I did run the 4.24 drivers for a while before without any trouble. I've downloaded the "detonator destroyer" and I think that'll be my next test, if the 4in1 upgrade didn't solve the trouble.

Sorry to read that you're having trouble!

My now defunct 45 Gb 75GXP required not more than 35 mins to format into 4 partitions.

eobard, you're giving me bad news here. I have two brand new 40 Gb Barracuda IV's awaiting further healing of the Wrist That Disliked Los Angeles, TM, Marca Registrada so that they can be installed.

OK. I assume that you used only MS's fdisk to partition the drive, and the format command to prepare the partitions for useful work? Jittery nerd needs to know!

I did a straight, "off the shelf" 98fe install, no funny buisness or 3rd party stuff. It seems solid now. My problems appear to have been courtesy of Microsoft. I removed the version of Internet Exploder and Outhouse Express that came with Picture It 2000 and replaced them with the versions that came with my Rogers internet cd, all seems good now.

Sniffle. Thanks, eobard. I'm hoping that the "stupid Internet jam-up" has nothing to do with an iffy Seagate.

I figured out why it took so long, it was not just formatting, it was also checking the disk surface integrity. I formatted the 40gig Maxtor that I just got back from RMA and it took about 3-5 minutes BUT the scandisk is 40 minutes in and looks like it's going to take 3 1/2hours to complete on this drive. Stupid 5400spin! I'd hate to be trying to run a complete diagnostic on an ATA66 drive of this size. (They did make 40gig 66's right?)
