Toshiba haven't denied paying off Paramount, and Paramount (so far as I know) haven't denied getting a payoff. On the other hand, Warner have categorically denied a payoff from Sony. So what does that prove? "He said, she said". At the end of the day, it's almost dead certain that there have been a LOT of back-room deals, under-the-table payoffs, and all sorts of favors exchanged in this deal, by EVERYONE.

Futher, a story widely quoted on the 'Net as originating with Consumer Electronics Daily (subscription required so I can't verify, but given the wide attribution on the net, I've got to believe it to be true):

Quote:
Toshiba promised Paramount and DreamWorks Animation "some money" to cover costs "to jointly promote" their titles, in a deal for the studios to support HD DVD and not Blu-ray (CED Aug 21 p1), Toshiba's top HD DVD executive told Consumer Electronics Daily at IFA Friday.
Here's a link to the Google search I used to find the above:

Its not weird for toshiba and for sony to give money to companies in order to "justify" the extra costs for a new HD format. Both do it and im sure SONY does it even more since SONY has larger pockets....However SONY is giving money left and right since they dont want to loose another format war like they did with Betamax, Minidisc and others.

There's no denying that Sony's track-record with introducing new media formats thoroughly sucks. LOL

I do exactly the same as Sony, et al, except in my case were talking very small incentives to get a customer's business. ~$100m is pretty small money to these companies. Perhaps no more than a token gesture. After all, one successful movie will make that, or more in profits.

If anything the money is to cover their costs spent on the format they're ditching. There's nothing unusual about such deals, and no reason why it should be a secret.

Which Blu-ray disc manufacturing problem would that be then? Presumably the issue with damage to the reflective layer in the disc? Isn't the HD-DVD manufacturing process a superset of the DVD manufacturing process? Shh, don't tell the HD-DVD lot, but it's a problem that's been seen with DVD and Laserdisc too.

On a slightly different note, how long before 4K becomes the HD standard, together with it's increased storage requirements?

Although, generally Sony's engineering has been rather better than their competitors. For example Look at Betamax vs VHS. Also take a look at DCC vs MiniDisc. There's no denying that Sony's managed to produce some technically very good standards, even if they've not caught on.

From what I've seen, the money is almost NEVER a cash payoff. I highly doubt you'll find a check from Toshiba to Paramount for $150m, any more than you'll see a check from Sony to Time-Warner. Rather, they payoff is as you say, in the form of reduced fees for mastering and duplication, coop advertising, special promotions, and that sort of thing.
