2 NICs More Speed? More Traffic?

So some MBs come with 2 NICs built in. What is that for? What would you do with it? It is my understanding that it does not make anything faster to have two pipes to your network switch right? Is it a deal where you have one to a router and one to a lan? or one dedicated to an FTP server you have running and the other for browsing?
