I like this part..."there is only a "small" chance of a killer black hole forming"

But more likely what will happen at the worse is one of the guys in there somewhere in the miles & miles underground will just disappear during a test and nobody will notice, thinking nothing bad happened.... until they do a head count or enough start to disappear that they start to notice...

Yea, I grew up watching the Twilight Zone & The Outer Limits...

Reminds me of a shrink I had who wanted to put me on a new med. He said that ethically he had to tell me that 1 in 10,000 who take this med will develop a skin rash that will get worse until they are hospitalized and die. He was actually annoyed when I said no thanks

I wish I could get those kind of odds in Vegas.

Looks like we are still here, any word on the test run?

Well Cliff, here, sit down, make your self comfortable...

If they create one it might be so small as to go unnoticed as it politely dined upon near by atoms, if things were still, in might just float unfed and unnoticed as it cleared out to space between itself and near by existence.

But! If there IS activity there is matter! and if there is matter it's lunch time.... until it clears out a space between its gravitational field and near by matter....until there's activity... (The worlds always in change, hence, there's always activity...Activity leads to growth just like in sports! Hey here's a hungry little Sumo! Run away! Run away!

Not to worry! if any of this should occur we'd just fall back on plan "B"

That's where we travel back in time and uncreate the black hole we invited to lunch.

(There are still a few details to work out with plan "B".)

** It should be noted that mine are the fears and ravings of the ignorant and uninformed; Made available here for the amusement of Cliff and his friends.":O}

It's not that I find your ravings amusing or uniformed Daniel. I just don't take living or dying that seriously. When what you do for fun requires a 5 layer firesuit, you pretty much know there is a fair amount of risk involved..

Yes, although I don't think they have done any particle collisions yet. Those are due to be done late October.

statistics and odds. an odd statistic; last year 6 people died as a direct result of shark bite.
in that same time period, 3,000,000 died as a result of the bite of the tiny mosquito. obviously
more mosquitoes than sharks. on the other hand, fewer swimmers.

Sharks don't feed on humans, unlike mosquitos.

And one tends to notice a shark buzzing around your campsite!!

BTW the Male mosquitoes buzz but don't bite, the females bite but don't buzz. Me? I'll kill 'em just for the buzz! ":O}

The "power conduit" melting problem is worse than they initially thought. It's gonna be out of service until next Spring, IIRC. According to CERN, they usually shut such beasts down during the peak power period in winter, to save money.

I was watching a thing on Discovery with my kids the other night (or was it Science channel? I get the two confused some times, because there's a lot of overlap).

Anyway, one of the scientists said something that really, REALLY made me sit up and take notice.

All this time we've been told "Oh, the odds of creating a micro-black hole are so small as to be non-existent, and if we do, it'll just evaporate".

Well, this dude actually said "We're really hoping that we will create one, because if we do, it will validate our string-theory models".

In other words, this thing that we spent billions building can't blow up the planet, but if it does it'll prove we actually knew what we were doing.

I really, REALLY hope I'm misinterpreting or misunderstanding what I heard.......
