I used to like VIA based boards. My MVP3 was my first sort of favorite motherboard.

Very sad to see =(

Me to. I know some don't like Via but I had a lovlerly 8 or 9 year affiar with an Epox board and she was smooth and steady and faithful. Was there every morning without a single complaint.
Wish I could say the same for the women in my life.

Get a DFI Lanparty II mobo. The last one I had was just as temperamental as any woman. When it ran, it was awesome. GETTING it to run, though, required a lot of TLC.

The 64 dollar question. Was it the chipset or the board?

Motherboard. It was an NF2 chipset. From what I gather, pretty much all the DFI LanParty II and LanParty II Ultras were that way. You could really crank them up and get them going great guns, but on a reboot, you might have to power cycle a couple of times before it came up, and when you tweaked the BIOS settings, things that didn't seem like they should cause problems (like changing the key repeat rate) would cause the system to not POST.

Like a say, they were temperamental and required some TLC, but once you finally got one dialed in, they were awesome.

Hate to be a nay-sayer here, that said, Via chipsets were a drag. Even after installing the drivers in the proper order--which Via never specified IIRC, they didn't work exactly right, IMHO.

I've had some good times with Via chipset boards. My Abit KT7A was a great motherboard. I replaced it with an Epox 8K3A+, which allowed me to run it at 209 FSB for over a year (I only replaced it because of bad caps).

It has been quite a while since I've had a board with a Via chipset though; they have been behind the curve for performance. Less competition isn't good news for bargain hunters.

Long time since I been here but here goes.

Likewise I've still got an epox 8k3a+ that runs as a webserver, though the caps do bulge a bit it still works. Used to run an athlon xp at 2.2ghz, 200fsb and raid0 no problems.

I'd have to say this is not entirely unexpected, since the nforce release they've had some serious competition and after the kt333 chipset VIA aint really been making the goods no?

With the atom and arm and 'normal' athlons and core duo's moving in on the low power processor arena how long before they shut shop there too?
