Riddle me this one

I just picked up a HDD at the thrift store for $2. When I get something like this, i don't look to close as to what it is. If it does't work it goes in the trash and I'm out 2 bucks.
This is it:
Conner CFS540A 540MB 3.5" IDE Hard Drive [Seagate]
Imagine my surprise when i saw what it's selling for, $25 on ebay and $35-$45 other places! What the........?
Anybody have a clue as to why a 540Mb is selling for the same price as a 20 or 30GB?

There may be a niche for old drives, some businesses may have an old legacy machine for a specific purpose in their office, and a new drive may not work at all in that machine.

Rather than spend time completely upgrading it, they'll quite happily buy the odd old spare part for it.

I was reading somewhere that an author was still writing books on one of these:

Eccentricity must play a part, but he was saying that he like the machine because all it does is simple word processing, without any distractions.

So, you can imagine that he would gladly buy old parts for that, which we would see as worthless.

I got a Maxtor 30Gb IDE drive at a yardsale for 50 cents. It's in my old machine & works perfectly to this day...LOL
I use if for backups & program storage as it's a rather slow drive at 30mbs access rates.

Hey, anybody feeling nostalgic enough to pay $30 for a 554Mb HDD? I think I can dig in box and find a few parts came along about the same era. i could do well here.

Maybe you could beat it up a bit and sell it as a distressed antique. That's easily another 20 bucks right there.

I've got a Trident Daytona video card and a no name sound card, it has 2 connections, one for speakers and one for antenna. Soaking them in Coke should age them a bit.
Damn, I just threw out a Cyrx CPU! And a couple of K-7's.
I've got the Abit BP6 w/ dual 366 Cellys. I know they might be borderline age wise but they're kind of unique too.
I think I'll open a storefront on Ebay-make a killing!

As Danrok says, it's probably because there's some legacy kit that's picky about what drives it works with, and the CFS540A is one of the drives that works. Hence, people wanting a replacement are having to buy in a market that has a restricted supply.

For some reason nobody thought mine was some kind of antigue or anything. It didn't sell. It cost $.80 to put it on ebay and since it was your idea sam, I think it only fair that you pay 1/2 or $.65. You can use personal check if you want. I trust you.
