PlayStation 4 Using PS3 Cell Processor

Quote:
We already know that the PS3's Cell processor is going 45nm in 2009, but if Impress' information is correct, then the chip is set to be around much longer than that. Apparently Sony's next generation PS4 is also set to sport the Cell processor when it arrives.

There's nothing to stop them re-using the processor, but increasing it's speed - especially as they've shrunk the feature size. There's also not a lot to stop them swapping the PPC core out for a more powerful unit, and adding a few more SPEs for performance reasons.

I agree. The Cell architecture was very forward-thinking, and should enable Sony to produce at least two more generations fairly readily, I believe. Especially given that the industry is finally realizing that the only way to really increase performance in the future is going to be through increased parallelism.
