Freescale, Samsung partner on LED display technology

EDN - With an eye on the European Union's ROHS (Restriction of Certain Hazardous Substances) electronics directive, Freescale Semiconductor and Samsung Electronics have collaborated to address the market for energy-efficient and environmentally friendly LEDs (light-emitting diodes).

What is it in the LEDs that is so bad?

It's not so much that there's anything in the LEDs that is bad, as it is that LEDs are very expensive to manufacture.

The ROHS directive from the EU makes CCFLs undesirable to produce, because they use mercury. LEDs do not, but are more expensive to produce (hence the popularity of CCFLs). With the reduction in mercury levels because of the ROHS directive, the demand for LEDs is anticipated to increase, making them cheaper, and broadening the applications for them.

I believe they're testing out LED street lights somewhere in the USA.

Wasn't that in Ann Arbor? Although LEDs aren't yet at the same efficiency as a sodium lamp...
