Nvidia Announces "personal Supercomputer"

Written by Daniel
Tuesday, 18 November 2008
Hardware maker Nvidia has announced a new computer that has the power of a cluster of computers at a small fraction of the cost.

Tuesday, November 18, 2008 8:20 AM PST
Nvidia, working with several partners, has developed the Tesla Personal Supercomputer, powered by a graphics processing unit based on Nvidia's Cuda parallel computing architecture. Computers using the Tesla C1060 GPU processor will have 250 times the processing power of a typical PC workstation, enabling researchers to run complicated simulations, experiments and number crunching without sharing a supercomputing cluster, Nvidia said. Shazam! Almost makes me dream up a reason to need one, think of the bragging rights! Imagine the Folding you could do with one of these machines! I wonder what performance benefit you get by simply buying the ~$1700 "Vid" card? Possibly the gaming monster from hell?

If it's half what they claim it's a little wonder!

I wonder how many people with no earthly need will buy one, just for the "I'm SO better than you, Mr Jones!" effect?

Truth is I would if I could and I'm fairly sure one day we'll both have one....because we can...":O}

Read some more about this new PC from Nvidia. Doesn't look like it would be a "super" PC that would benefit the average back yard PC user all that much. Seems it's designed for genuine serious science types. Hate to miss out on the fun, I'll go ahead and finish my Ph.D program at MIT. (Yeah, in a different universe, sigh)

Science pigs most of the good computers! But they are the only ones that make them...so that's OK.":O}

I'm still curious about the ~$1700 and $3500 Vid cards that come with these Teslas from Nvidia. Dunno if they only benefit number crunching or if great video is part of the attraction.

Think of it as a graphics card without any of the video generation stuff on-board. It does have 4GB RAM though. Supposedly at the 936GFLOPS mark, which is a little better than the 51GFLOPS for the Intel i7-965.

It's a relief that these Vidcards aren't made for Video, really. Mighty expensive barrier to ultimate gaming if they were! Thank you for the clarification, Aedan.
