The biggest problem with lithium batteries has been their energy density - when something goes wrong, there's a great deal of energy waiting to be dumped. Dumping that energy is generally what causes things to catch fire or explode...

For example, 1 gram of TNT contains about 4184 joules of energy.
A high capacity laptop battery contains ~80Watt hours (WH) of energy.

That's not easy to directly compare, however - a watt is a joule per second. So 80WH is the same as 80 watts over 3600 seconds. That's the same as 288,000 joules of energy. Remembering how much energy is in a gram of TNT, we can divide 288,000 by 4184 and end up with the result of just under 69. That laptop battery stores the same amount of energy as 69 grams of TNT...
