You'd just have to hope that these won't self ignite, otherwise they are going to be getting close to explosive!

The heating experienced with Li-ion batteries (and indeed with practically all batteries) is a function of the charge mobility. If I understand this article correctly, that should be substantially improved, meaning that the self-heating issue should be greatly reduced.

Their point about being able to charge a car in 5 minutes is well made: the charging system would have to be able to withstand loads of about 1500 amps at 120v for periods of 5 minutes.

What this basically means is that a practical charging system would have to be able to run something in the neighbourhood of 2Kv in order to keep the cabling to a manageable size and reduce transmission line losses to a reasonable level. That means there would have to be some serious safety measures in place on the charging and coupling systems, simply because of the energies involved.

For practical home charging, you'd just about have to have a charging station with its own battery system so that it could slowly charge from the grid while rapidly charging the vehicle, or perhaps a simple and easy way to swap battery packs. For commercial charging stations (e.g. gas stations), you'd almost need a dedicated grid sub-station right there in order to provide the energies involved.

Perhaps, a gas turbine at the station? Which are non-polluting.

Something similar to natural gas can be made from festering garbage, a renewable gas.

Although, I'd imagine you would need quite a substantial "energy from waste" plant, to provide enough gas.

Really, this is pretty exciting stuff! A car that re-charges in 5 mins is comparable to a car that refuels in 5 mins....even if you have to recharge twice as often as a gas engine refules...hey...what's 5 mins?

I hope my comments didn't come across as negative; that wasn't my intent. I was simply pointing out that there are some very real and practical issues that have to be overcome. Don't expect this tech to suddenly change the face of the market for electric cars. IF this tech pans out, it is going to be only one small step in an entire spectrum of solutions that have to be implemented to make pure electric vehicles a practical reality.

A twelve charge 'fuel' station, fully charging batteries in 2 minutes is going to be needing a good sized power station to generate the 1.5MW of power required...

You could do it with 3 x 16L diesel gensets though That's about 60 gallons of diesel an hour.

They could offer different recharge times, with the fastest costing more.

So, you could opt for a 30 minute charge, and get some food, do some shopping, etc. whilst your battery is charging.

For me, living on a small island, I'd only ever need to charge up over-night at home.

We've got some of the Smart EVs being pilot tested here now:

A nice integration scenario Dan! I hope you get a chance to try it out!

Fortunately, those 60 gallons of diesel won't add any carbon to the atmosphere. Wouldn't that just kinda defeat the purpose of the pure electric vehicle gestalt? Wait a sec, 1.5 MW at 60 gallons?

Burning stuff on a large scale never was a good idea.

Future generations will look back at our crude combustion engines, in the same way we look at steam engines.

What, with romantic rose tinted spectacles?

The irony of this is that modern commuter trains in London are slower than the steam trains that they replaced. The technological progress of the last 70 years doesn't seemed to have helped there.

As so many have said before me... The way forward has much to do with the way back.
