Report: Netbooks are Killing the Laptop Market

Written by Daniel

Margins are dropping like flies in the laptop market

Shane McGlaun (Blog) - April 20, 2009 11:10 AM

Consumers are staying away from the higher-priced notebook computers that sold relatively well in years past thanks to the poor global economy. Instead of buying the high-end and expensive notebooks that may have been the choice in 2007 or 2008, consumers are buying low-cost netbooks in droves. [Front page...]

There's another article here (AOA - What if our tech is good enough?) that touches on this same issue, but from a different perspective.

I've been looking for a ne computer for my inlaws. They mainly use it for some internet browsing, some word/excel, skype and an internet messenger. Sometimes they use it for some music, and updating their MP3 players.

Well for what they do I'm thinking of: this

At the moment one of the stores has a deal: eMachine Desktop by Acer with 19" LCD Monitor

Now for $900NZ this is the same cost as my MSI wind with a 6 cell battery, and is more than they will ever need.

So both those articles have weight here. It is essentially the desktop version of a netbook, and is 'good enough'.

Has eMachine's quality improved enough to make them a good buy? Used to be that they were terrible boxes. Not trying to rain on your parade, I'm just sayin'.

Yes and no.

Wouldn't normally touch an eMachine.

Actually had the chance to open one of these up, and the build quality looks decent.
It's essentially an Acer Aspire One in a desktop box, with a DVD drive, no wireless or bluetooth.
The monitor, keyboard, and mouse that come with that machine are very basic, but it's only really going to be used for word processing, and internet related stuff. We have a decent keyboard and mouse, and the speakers are only going to be used for skype calls.

As I haven't heard any problems with the build quality of the Acer Aspire One (barring the usual for any PC) I don't see any issues with this.

I looked at netbooks, but by the time they've got to a useful spec for me, I might as well have purchased a laptop.

If you just want to check your email or do some web browsing, they're great. Go much beyond that, and they fall short.

I'm still looking for a good replacement for my Psion 5MX...

For 90+% of users, they are more than powerful enough. Mine is more than enough for uni - including Altium, watching video - even hooked up to my tv and occasional video encoding.

I can even play sins of a solar empire when hooked up to an external monitor, almost at minimum settings due to the graphics chip, but can still play it.

Don't regret the purchase at all. Might by something a bit more powerful in the future with a larger screen, and upgrade the desktop, but will be using this for a long time yet. I'll only upgrade the RAM soon, and look into getting a SSD drive when 250GB+ drives are affordable.

If Netbooks are "wrecking" the laptop market, that's a big WHAA! Full featured laptops are becoming much less overpriced, about effin' time.
