Question What are the reasons for hard drive crash??

I just bought a branded laptop few months back. And the hard drive has crashed. Company is sending a replacement, but I don't understand what made it happen.

In future How can I prevent my laptop and hard drive from crashing..?
Are there ways to know when the hard drive will crash?

Please help..!

Usually hardware failure. A good backup is the best defense. You can not do much to prevent a drive from dying. A software crash can be caused from many things.

Hard disks don't like being knocked whilst they're running. That includes picking up and putting down a laptop whilst the disk is spinning.

If the hard disk is only a few months old, then the chances are that it was defective when it was manufactured.

Aedan beat me too it. If you plan on moving it around a lot try and go into the power settings and have the HD shut down after X number of minutes. That might help, but.. there will probably be a delay when you try to open new apps or if you wanna write something to the HD.

Yeah thats pretty much it. When my customers ask me, I explain it by saying, its like a gearbox in your car, its mechanical so it can malfunction for no apparent reason. However doing things to it that arent recommended bring it about quicker, IE: moving the drive while its active, or dropping the clutch in 3rd gear trying to do a wheelie.

PS: Change to first before dropping the clutch :P

Double clutching first may be necessary. Don't think there's a parallel in the computing universe.
