Now that everything is moving to flat panels, they FINALLY figure out that there's a cartel?!?!

A little over 10 years ago, I worked for an outfit called Display Technologies. We manufactured high resolution computer monitors, primarily gray-scale displays with a paper-white phosphor. Among other things, we manufactured a 19" display that did 2048x1664 pixels in 256 gray-scale. The horizontal refresh was, IIRC, about 120 KHz, and the video ran at about 415 MHz.

In 1997. NOBODY else was making monitors to this spec at that time.

There was exactly ONE manufacturer of tubes in the WORLD (Clinton Electronics) that made paper-white gray-scale tubes. They poured all the glass they were going to use for that year's production in TWO DAYS.

When I inquired as to why they were the only one in the world making the tubes, I was told that the demand was too small for more than one manufacturer to survive.

That was a lie.

The fact was that Clinton had an exclusive agreement with the company that made the gun assemblies used in the tubes (I forget who that was now), and because there were only like 3 gun assembly makers in the world, nobody else wanted to upset the apple cart.
