I have no idea why this is happening

I have no idea why this is happening, but today I went to turn on my computer on when my BIOS got to "Detecting Primary Master [Press F4 to Skip]", my computer emmited this terrible scary dot-matrix printer type scaning/(scraping?) sound. After a little more loading stuff, but before Windows 98 is loaded, I get "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER".

Sounds like you had a head crash. At the very least, you've almost certainly had some sort of hard disk failure. I'd say it's unlikely you're going to recover anything useful off that drive.

One thing you can try (I've seen it work in a few situations) is to put the drive in your freezer for about a day, take it out and try to boot it. Make sure when you put it in the freezer that you seal it in a zip-lock baggy and remove as much air as possible from the bag (to reduce the possibility of condensation on the drive while in the freezer).

If it works, you may be able to get it up long enough to get your critical data off the drive. Odds are, it won't work, but if it's important, it might be worth a try. Otherwise, it's either kiss the data good-bye or send it to a data recovery house, where they may not be able to recover anything either.
