Thinking about building a new system

I think I wanna start with this case. I'm pretty sure I wanna do raid as well. But also thinking about just getting a SSD drive as my brother has one and the speed of the OS with the SSD drive is just mind blowing.

Don't know if I wanna go AMD or Intel yet. Course I'm going to want to game, I'll probably put WOW on it. (I know not hard core gaming) but I'm also thinking about getting BF2 Bad Company. Also I'll be getting the new Half Life game when it comes out as well.

Any input?

I'll throw in my 2 cents.

I just built my partner an Intel Core i5 750 based machine, hums along quite nicely with W7 Ultimate x64.

Depending on how much you want to throw at it, I would go socket LGA1156, because you can run anythign from a i3 (entry level and mid range dual core), to an i5 (high end dual core, low end quad).

i5 750 is the only quad core for LGA1156.

If your on a budget i3 530, otherwise i5 750.

Gigabyte make good LGA1156 motherboards, H55 chipset is good. I used the GA-H55-UD3H. Onboard video is CPU dependent. As now the graphics controller is on the CPU rather than the northbridge.

You mentioned you need RAID support though which means you will need the H57 chipset, such as the GA-H57M-USB3. Same board, just has USB3.0 support and RAID 0, 1, 01, and 5.

4GB RAM minimum, 8GB I dont think is necessary just yet. But you can pick up 2x2GB reasonably cheaply and add another 2x2GB if you need it at a later stage.

GTX470 is a good solid performer for graphics, if a little pricey. I am still using the 9800GT in my partners machine, but next week (if I remember) I'll be getting a GTX470 and moving the 9800GT to another box.

1.5TB are really cost effective these days. Cant offer any insight into SSD as I only have a very early one and I need capacity more-so than speed.

Hope this at least points you in the right direction.

Actually there is an i7 that runs in Socket 1156 too.
There is an i5 that has a CPU & GPU core in the processor. Not that it will help you with gaming, but something to think about.
A student told me that World of Warcraft could use up to 20 Gigs of space on your hard drive because Blizzard is always updating it. Otherwise its not a huge video card hog.
Which new Half-Life game is coming out? Episode 3?
Let us know what you select. I always recommend newegg.com

500 Watts is not enough for a decent modern rig, IMO.

I need to find some money first. I'll probably start with a case. Maybe next pay day. I've been getting more and more music making gear. So money is being spent on that.

A new machine doesn't have first call on the money supply? Gasp! Or, welcome to real life. The horror!

Yeah, I've really wanted to do SSD. As I've said before, my brother has one and MAN is it fast!!! But... it might be cheaper to just go raid sata drives.

Hold off for a few days before you buy any storage stuff. I'm working on some benchmarks that may shed some light on which way you should go......

I've yet to even get a case. (which I believe will be my first thing to get) After that, the ball might start rolling some. I have a REALLY NICE USB mic I just put on lay a way at a local pawn shop. (reg $150) I got it for $80 I own around $60 (I think) And I DO need to renew my subscription at a certain site as well.

Having the responsibility of taking care of a family can really mess with the schedule to update those computer goodies. Sigh.

Yeah, I want to get ours down and have been working on it slowly but siurely. Will probably blow another $500 in Disneyland passes this month though.
