Believe it or not, I remember reading that very issue of PE. I was in my first year of college and couldn't afford the $500 Texas Instruments calculator I was lusting after for my engineering courses, so I was investigating how to build one from a kit.

I also read the article about the Altair. We were already using Basic, and probably even Fortran by then at the university(all on punch tape or cards). I marveled at the potential of that little box.

Suffice it to say that I settled on using my slide rule

These magazines were a mine of information, pre-Internet.

I was buying PC magazines for about 2 years, before I could afford to buy a PC.
