I never considered mine to be stylish, but it was cheap. Still, it was a fair bit of money for a child's birthday present at the time.

I would have had no chance of getting anything more expensive.

I wouldn't have considered it stylish either. Cheap maybe - relative to other machines on the market at the time at least. Some of the cost cutting did make the machine more prone to certain types of failure (like the overheating of the voltage regulator), and limited the documentation that came with it.

Machines like the BBC micro gave you an easy way of connecting them up to the outside world - the BBC had a lot of interfacing options, which the Spectrum just simply didn't have. Likewise, writing code was very different between the Spectrum and the BBC, the difference was night and day! The BBC gave you a well thought out, well documented OS that knew of concepts like file systems and worked to support your code. The Spectrum didn't even give you an OS - Either you worked entirely within their BASIC interpreter, or you wrote your own code to do pretty much everything.
