Why does a RAM maker feel it needs to acquire a joystick maker? I was happy enough when they just made RAM.

In my view, this is just a failure to recognise the need to limit one's activities in order to improve them. Ah well, best of luck to them...

Nah, I disagree in this case. Quite simply, these guys have shown us that they do EVERYTHING right.

When they made only RAM, they were consistently the best, or arguably so.

Then they made power supplies. Are they consistently good? Yes. A few of them are legendary, like the HX850. One of the best performing consumer power supplies ever, and in its second revamping. And any of their other power supplies are excellent as well. 7 year warranty? Who else does that?

Their products perform either at the top or are on par with the best stuff on the market, regularly. Personally, I would buy any of their kit blind. I trust them. And their build quality is absolutely without peer. Customer service? One of the best as well. Lifetime replacement guarantees? Yes. No questions asked. Basically, I'm saying that there is very little room for improvement. This is a very, very fine company. They announced an IPO several months ago for 78 million USD. I wish I could have bought some shares.

Why can't they do just as good a job with input devices?

EDIT: I just checked on the IPO, and actually, it was postponed in May due to poor market conditions. So it seems that they have some business savvy as well

I have to agree with all you are saying.

But the old Axum about being promoted upward until you fail, having reach the point where you are no longer competent, would seem to have, in general, a similar tendency among corps.

They proliferate outwards as the personal that made them a success age and retire.

Replaced by the accountants who understand expansion and profits, but not always the qualities that made the company stand out...

Excellence is by definition, rare and generally tightly focused... I find it hard to see how excellence can be indefinably maintained in an expansionist and broadly based Company.

At some point the really good people you have become over worked ot you start hiring second best to meet your needs. These pitfalls can of course be avoided at lest for a time...but how often are they?

To do so requires true excellence, which as you point out, Corsair has shown itself capable of in the past...

My concern then...is how long can this course of action be pursued before Excellence is lost?

That is called the Peter Principle, and I read the book a long time ago

It also heavily depends on the company they are buying. Is it good already, or not-so-good. From what I hear, they are buying a company with a pretty good reputation.
