Is it? It hired an investment bank to look at the options. Smart move to deal with shareholders.

I realize that's what they say, but the option is 'on the list'.

Their liquid assets are somewhat questionable, they have severly downsized, and another firm owns 15% of the company. But I see the most dangerous thing is looking at the possibility of selling patents, and that in itself doesn't show much me confidence in their ability to compete in the market.

I once did business with a large financial printing company that sold the patent on a proprietary process they had pioneered, and had been developing, for several years. The company they sold it to did it better. In the end, the creators of the process realized that the patent was the core of what they'd had, and it was now gone. My company ended up buying them 4 or 5 years later at a pittance. They were on the fast track to liquidation. I do hope that isn't the case here, and they do come up with a course of action beneficial to all.

Sounds like they've hired JPMorgan Chase to examine every option they have, so that they can work out what to do next.

They have debts totaling ~$2bn, so I can imagine their creditors may have played a hand in this. They will want to know how AMD intends to pay them their money.

We need an AMD in the game, we need a better AMD in the game, but what we have is better than nothing even though it is almost nothing...sigh.

Who sees an Intel competitor on the horizon? (I'm speaking chips here, not peripherals)

If the Athlon is AMD's only success story it's a crying shame. As weak a competitor as AMD is, it still does a vital service in keeping Intel's prices down a bit. Maybe it's all moot if the Chinese figure out how to build Intel style processors.

I can't see them disappearing any time soon, so long as nothing catastrophic happens.

AMD has US$ 1.013 billion equity, and still makes a profit, US$ 495 million for 2011.

But, I can see that's probably not looking good enough to its creditors.

Intel is making far more money however.
