scsi is fast, especially u160, but the service life is why U buy scsi, they are rated at 8-10 times the hours of ATA drives...... and $90 is about the goin price I think for a u2 18gb, and the u160's are about $130 I think

For a single user, not that much. Top end SCSI drives will outperform top end IDE drives without question. However, top end SCSI drives and cards cost far more than top end IDE drives.

With well chosen IDE parts, you'll be within 15% of well chosen SCSI parts, at 50% of the cost.

For multi-user or heavy multi tasking, there's a world of difference between the two. SCSI's features like Command Tagging,Scatter/Gather,Bus Disconnect and others mean that a SCSI system runs circles around an IDE system.

With well chosen IDE parts, you'll find that the well chosen SCSI system is over twice as fast for multi-user systems.

Windows 95/98/ME are unable to take advantage of many SCSI features, and do not benefit from SCSI. Win NT/2K do take advantage, and so are better performers on the same SCSI hardware. (Windows XP, last I heard, was having some issues with SCSI adapters, and as such, wasn't recommended)

Dunno, depends on the drive model.

You might want to check out ebay. I got 4 23Gb seagate drives for $50

They are full hieght, but they are to be used externally anyway.

On the performance:

To make it simple, ATA drives write wicked fast, but read like ****. SCSI drives Read wicked fast, but write like ****. It's a trade off.

My 7 drive Seagate 25 gig raid 5 reads at a sustained 40Mb/sec. (Card maxxed out)

My 2 drive 8 gig raid 0 reads at 30 to 35Mb/sec.

and my 4 drive 92 gig Raid 0 hit's the 40Mb.sec. limmit too.

Not a one of them can write faster than 20mb/sec. though.

Another thing to considder is the multiple users issue. You are multiple users all by yourself. For example. I save to the 92 gig raid 0 using kazaa, while I am accesing files from that drive on another machine, and burning cd's from that drive. I can watch divx, write constantly, and burn at 12x without any problem. Just try to do that with an ATA.

Well, what I have found on them says that they are LVD ultra-160 10,000 RPM.

LVD is U2W 80meg/sec

It's not easy to find a cable with 10 connectors. (I have one, I know.)

I would recommend that you get a dual channel Raid controller, and run 5 on each channel. You can still make one raid array out of them.

Also... unless you want to kiss 9x goodbye forever, don't buy an adaptec RAID card. No drivers. Mylex supports 9x, although i don't know why anyone would ever want to give up all the benefits of running nt or 2k. (I HATE XP! DIE DIE DIE!)

Ummm yeah.. they are REALLY EXPENSIVE.

15 is the magic number. That's the maximum number of drives a wide channel can support. I'm already envisioning a 45 drive raid 5 on a three channel card. You could use cheap little 2.1 gig drives, and still come out with like 90 gig.
