Question ATI Radeon 9700 pro prob, screenshots attached, theories needed

Ok the graphics card is owned by a friend of mine. Its a Tyan Tachyon 9700 pro just like the one I have.

It has never been overclocked or tweaked. The screenshots show the problem.

Im thinking it might be the PSU. Currently his PSU is a 350watt Enermax. System specs are: 1.33Ghz Tbird, ECS KT266a mobo, 2 hard drives, 1 cd rom drive, 1 cd burner, Lian Li case driving 3 80mm fans, and 384MB PC266 RAM.

A reboot solves the issue but after awhile the lines come out again.

Was wondering if anyone else is experiencing this??? Any theories why this is happening guys???

THanks

I've seen this before. It looks like it's overclocked to much on the memory but you said it has never been clocked. It looks like it belongs to the trash. Try other drivers, settings, check the temps of the card is possible. I think I had that once with an old AIW radeon and I fixed it by changing drivers and rebooting.

JayJay,

In my research before volt modding my 9500np I came across a few instances of what your friend is experienceing. If you have the time and patience the following thread here will explain better what is happening.....and possible solutions if (s)he wanted to do a fix. The pertinent info is on page 2, but you really need to read the 1st 2 pages to have an understanding.

HTH.

This looks EXACTLY like damage cause by overclocking the memory too far.

If you havent overclocked the memory then the ram or memory controller in the GPU are busted and you need to RMA it.

I doubt this is down to the PSU, but id probably test it in your PC just to be sure.

i had the same problem as you have, but mine was done by not being careful while removing the shim from the chip messed it up in a bad way. never worked since couldn't take it back becoz i *u*ked it so had to buy new one.
at the time i felt sick but got over it in the end. your card is a goner sorry. it got nothing to do with drivers or any thing like that.

I've heard of instances where ppl have damaged those little resistors on the core when not being careful enough removing the shim, but as for frying.....don't that have to involve some form of overclock or modification ?

If the card is'nt RMAable and is a dead loss maybe worth a try doing the Vref mod as the above is a symptom of low Vref when volt modding.
