I've heard figures between 50% to 75% in terms of failures. Basically it all depends on the GPU itself - not all GPUs can be softmodded.

From my experiences here, mine didnt mod without artifacts, bradmax57 bought two and one modded ok, but died later on.
I dont think anyone will guarantee them, you may be lucky on Ebay though, saw one go for £220!! Overclockers have the 9800 SE AIW for £165 or the 9800 Pro for £218.49.

Hardly seems worth while to face odds like that!

Yep mine died and the replacement didnt work, actually out of 5 cards I know about mine was the only one that did so thats 80% failure & 20% success, like laz said some on ebay are guaranteed to softmod but for how long? mine lasted a couple of months and it wasnt clocked at the time. There is a shop in Germany that sells guarenteed ones to soft mod for about £200 inc delivery to UK although I dont know what the guarantee of the card itself is, as the sites in German and even using bablefish didnt find my answer on this maybe I'll email them.

thing is even after a stressed burn in with one of those SE's that did sofmod you wouldnt want to spend extra cash on heatsinks for the core/mem cause it'd be even more likely to burn out with the extra stress

it's far to risky/too much hastle

buying a 9800pro seems like the better choice, more so if you intend to mod

It seems weird that most of them have 3.3ns ram also, some have 2.8 granted but the 3.3 is only rate at 606, yet the hercules is set at 680 so is alreday factory overclocked yet I had mine upto 730 no wonder it went
