Which mid-range video card?

I'm soon gonna build a computer for a friend (Barton something, nForce2 mobo, 512 DDR etc).

I have been looking at these to go with it:

* GeForceFX 5600, 256 RAM
* GeForceFX 5600XT, 256 RAM
* Radeon 9600 PRO, 128 RAM
* Radeon 9600 SE, 128 RAM
* Radeon 9600, 128 RAM

Unfortunately the 9600XT is out of his price range here in DK. Which of the cards above is the best for gaming?

Allan have you considered a Radeon 9800 SE All In Wonder? Its just as fast as the 9600XT but has the AIW features and the chance of being a 9800 AIW Pro if it soft-mods ok.
They are about £150-165 here for the full retail Hercules 9800 SE AIW, these are guaranteed to be the 256Bit ones and have a "chance" of modding.
Game play is awesome, DVD playback is even better!
Un modded mine gets about 14K in 3DMark 2001, and about 3800 Marks in 3D Mark 2003. in my Abit setup below. Mine does not soft mod without artefacts, but the scores leap up to 16500 and 4800 resp.

Well of course a 9800 is better, but that seems to be quite out of his range (the card you mentioned is 2178 Dkk and I believe that is something like 1000 Dkk to mutch).
Of the cards you show I would definitely recommend the Radeon 9600 Pro. For gaming that is simply the fastest card in your list. The others just don´t cut it for gaming. The cheaper versions go for just above thousand (according to www.edbpriser.dk).
If your friends budget allows it a Geforce FX 5700 Ultra is a bit chaper than the 9600 XT, and also offers better performance in most cases. Could be worth a look.
But if you are confined to the cards you mentioned I would definitely go for the 9600 Pro.

If you are really really lucky you might find an old 9500 Pro or even a 9700 (non pro). In that case they both easily beat the other cards.

Summary:
Only buy the "Ultra" (Nvidia) or "Pro" and "XT" (ATI) cards in this price segment. The others are a lot slower. (Note htat Nvidia XT cards are slower than Ultra, whereas ATIs XT series is faster than the Pro cards.)

Mr B over at overclockers did a review recently. Looks like the 5600 Ultra BM'd much better than the 9600XP at least for newer stuff.

If you can, look at the memory... I hate what mfgrs are doing lately. It all comes down to ram speed. I think there are a dozen models for the 9600 alone, and the price difference is primarily due to memory speed.... As always, overclock for all it's worth.

Thanks for your input! As much as I would like to put in a good card in my friends computer, his budget doesn't allow a Radeon 9800. I'll look more into the 5700 and the 9600 pro, and be sure to stay clear of the nVidia XT's.

Yan - thanks for bothering to check the Danish prices. The budget is indeed about 1000-1200 DKK.

How much is the Radeon 9800 SE All In Wonder over there Allan?? Here its significantly cheaper than the Radeon 9800 and about the same/slightly more than the Radeon 9600 Pro, hence I sugested it.

we were lucky eh? £136 inc delivery for a 9800se which is only about £15 more than a 9600, I basically got a £300+ card for less than half price even if it only lasted for 2-3 months
