4.8 were really good, not so sure about 4.9, pitch had problems with is x800pro/xt and i dont want to risk it with my x800pro cause ive unlocked the 4 remaining pipelines. Id say if your going for catalyst's go 4,8 for now. Unless you go omega!

well, i tried 4.8, and it was acting funny, and I only got 16k in 3dm2k1
so, I did 4.9, and it is acting good, but I haven't tried 3dm2k1 yet..

I dont like 3dmark01, i dont think it gives a realistic score, 3dmark03 is far better and maybe Aquamark, but dont be put of by the Nvidia scores. Rememeber post your 3Dmark03 and Aquamark scores in my threads. Thanks.

best to go with 4.6 or 4.7 for now.
try setting your agp aperature to 64mb.
9800 line, all of 'em, have current driver issues. Happens when they write for a new chip, and not the current. seems most issues are anti-aliasing related, and some people are having better luck with the omega drivers. Don't look for anything special in the stock ATI's until January, or at least until about 6 weeks after HL2 releases. The current set are DOOM3 enhanced, and this causes issues with other games.

i'm running 4.9's on my asus 9800xt and they run ok for the most part. Although as said set agp aperature to 64meg, i dont know why but i was having big random fps issues with richard burns rally, which remained even if i turned the detail settings down to minumum, i found on a forum that setting this helped them so i did, and bobs your uncle its perfectly smooth at nigh on max detail settings including 6xaa and 16xaf, both of which i'd turned off trying to get some speed into it.
I havent tried omegas for a while, cataylst control centre is funky but sooo sloooow

setting the aperature to 64mb allows the cpu to send smaller packets through the agp bus. this, of course, makes for easier fitting packets into the vpu's mem
