ATI hits back at cheaters.....

Quote:
The list of affected games appears to be quite long. Call of Duty, America's Army, Battlefield 1942, Battlefield Vietnam, Enemy Territory, Far Cry, Joint Operations, MOH Pacific Assault, Quake 3 Arena, Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield, RTCW, Soldier of Fortune II and Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow are affected

The 4.10 driver is to blame.

So, the Catalyst 4.10 drivers and Punkbuster step on each other's toes and die horribly because of it? Neat. Wonder what kind of interaction's going on there! (Áedán starts thinking evil thoughts...)

buffer overruns. You know the deal...netcode can be used, i beleive, to cause a mem leak that will cause the game to hang. been big complaints about this in the HL2/CS:S front, but i've kept my mouth shut about it. I think it's kinda needed.

It was a format string bug, which really shouldn't be around these days. It basically means that HL2/CS:S mishandled some data, and tried to do certain types of operations that are not safe with it. In normal use it's not a problem, until certain character sequences appear. Those sequences are intepreted to mean something special, and end up pulling data from the stack. When the program goes back to retreive it's data from the stack, those sequences have already taken it. With a lot of clever work and some luck, you can use a format string bug to create an exploit, but it's not easy going.
