Question Graphics card advice

Hey guys, contemplating upgrading my graphics. Do you think this card is a good buy and a good card for my system? (see siggy below) Or is there something better value for money / better performance, for someone who doesn't mind doing a bit of 'tinkering' ?

Don't bother with it, the X800SE is really overpriced for it's performance, it won't be that much faster than your 9800Pro, there is the chance of the other pixel pipelines unlocking, but I've heard that ati physically cuts tracks to them on the die substrate with newer cores.

In that price bracket, the 6800 is your best bet, in fact for a little more you could get a 6800GT which would be about 2X the speed of that card

If you really wanted an ATI card though, you can get the X800XL which is a full 16 pixel pipe card for £211

Well, all the advice i've had from here has been good, so i'll go with your recommendation of the 6800. Just need to check out the prices and save up some pennies. You think it's a worthwhile upgrade then, given my system specs?

the SE suffix stands for ***** edition. Its a crippled card. and the fact that its a saphire means that its not only crippled, but its inbred as well :\

the XL really is a pretty sweet card, and worth getting, but as graham mentioned in another thread, the GF6 is a better long term solution. There is still a chance to unlock the remaining 4 pipes on a 6800NU as well so its worth consideration.

The 6800 will give you about a 50% boost over your current 9800 in most games, but in future games you are going to see probably closer to 2X the performance as more optimisations are made, and newer drivers are relaeased.
And there is always the chance of unlocking the other 4 pixel pipelines, which would make it about 2X as fast as your current card.

As for it being a worthwhile upgrade, thats a differant stroy, the 9800Pro is a very capable card, especially when overclocked, it can handle anything currently out and will still be a strong card until the next gen of cards are out.

Personally I would stick with the 9800Pro, and hold off for the next generation, you will only see sizable gains from a 16pipeline card or more really, I upgraded from a 9800SE (the SE range really are poor) and I saw massive gains, but from a 9800pro they would be much less.

I guess even less of a difference once I overclock the 9800Pro - we managed to take my friend's card up to 450/380 (GPU/ RAM)

So this issue won't be fixed by throwing more money at it? Is that heresy, or what?
