Scanner Problem

I have an old UMAX Astra 1220OU. It is an old scanner and has not been used much.
The problem is that when I scan a color picture from a book I get splotches/discolorization. It appears to be randow accross the image especially around the color silver. Other than that it scans ok.
Any ideas?
