I'd like your opinion on the Syncmaster 730BF 4ms lcd

I think I'll give my eyes a treat (and a rest) and finally replace my 5 year old 17" Samtron crt. The samsung 730BF costs around 350€ where I live and I'm impressed by the specs:

4ms
600:1
and above all DVI

what do you guys say? anyone with hands on experience?

Thanks

is it 4ms grey-to-grey, or 4ms black-to-white? very important spec.

It's 4ms grey to grey.

and I'll finally be able to use the DVI out on my Hercules 9700pro.
I know that CRTs are faster but I can't stand the eye strain anymore and we only have one pair of those for life

have you tried games on it, or are you just thinking about the purchase?

I've been looking at getting my home office new screens, and this is one on my list to look at. The contrast ratio is a bit low in comparison to some of the others, but i'm the type of guy that doesn't care about price..i don't mind waiting a bit to get what i want.

IF you have it already, how is it for games, and more importantly, FPS games like Battlefield 2, Et al? I'd love to know so i don't have to do a "buy and return" to find out!

I'm thinking about the purchase, I'd just like to have some opinions from people like yourself who know a lot about this stuff that we love (PC gear)!

Since I'm a CRT guy and almost completely LCD ignorant I'd like some knowledgeable comments about the specs so I can make a real rational decision.

Of course if I do end up buying it, I will be very glad to tell you and the rest of the wonderful AOA community about my experience with it. You guys deserve nothing less.

Well, the things that have me considering this myself are this:

Native Resolution : 1280 x 1024 (SXGA)
1280 x 1024 @ 60, 75Hz
Digital : DVI-D

This native resolution is higher than most other 17-inch LCD screens, as is the 4ms response time, hoever, it being grey-to-grey means that it is merely 8ms black-to-white, are there abouts, most likely(cheaper monitors will be closer to 16 and 20ms, but this one features a decent panel). This in itself is very good, so there are really no concerns in this department, but looking to see how they rate the response time colorwise is very important.

The contrast ratio is a bit low...i'd like 700:1 in the very least, but dependant on the usage environment, this may not be an issue. I get alot of sunlight in my office that require a high contrast level jsut to make the screen viewable during the day, so is a very important factor for myself.

While not completely familiar with this exact product, it does look very promising. It has been given a high rating in reviews, and noone has really complained about the gaming performance either, however you must have a decent card that can play at it's natural resolution to take full advantage of what this screen has to offer.

We are mostly a tech help site here, rather than a hardware review site(i'm working to change that!), so getting much more info than this can only be had from someone who has this screen themselves. Hopefully someone will pipe up for you!

Thanks a lot, your input has been rather helpful as it is. From what I'm gathering around the net this is pretty much the best I can get in this price range.
