Cool 512MB 7800GTX released!

Yes, it's finally arrived, the 512mb 7800GTX was released today. This little beauty sports reference memory speeds of 1.7Ghz and reference core speeds of 550mhz! It uses the quadro heatsink base for cooling so it's a dual slot solution. It has a massive fill rate of 13.2 GigaTexels per second, that's 3.2 GigaTexels faster than the radeon X1800 XT and 54.4GB memory bandwidth per second, that's 6.4GB more memory bandwidth per second compared to the X1800 XT. It sports dual DVI and TV-out with HDTV out support!

I can hear the gasps of amazement and although i don't want to spoil it, it does have a MSRP tag of $649! Welcome to the future my friends!

correction, right now that 7800gtx on steriods (coughlikebarrybondscough) is selling for $749. Kills the X1800XT, thats all that is important, but who really is going to drop $800 for a video card? You can get a computer for that much. I would just wait for a month and see the prices come down, probably by $150 by Christmas. And nvidia's approach of telling consumers that there will be "limited availibility" on the GTX 512MB is garbage because it is the only way rich suckers are suckered into paying $800. Come on, nvidia has the ball in its court now and its going to exploit the hell out of it, they are going to mass produce it so they can own any competition.

I just read over at the inquirer that Nvidia has no plans on dropping prices before christmas, and they sold out of these cards in the first 2 days of release. There will be more available next week according to Nvidia. Thats alot of money for a GPU.

who really wants to spend that much for a card? $550 is pushing the limit...but $750 that is just absurd. Ati might have a chance, because the poor folks would want a $550 card (irony isnt it?) instead of a ridiculous price of $750. Come on, the most you will see is about 10-20 frame jump. If that is justified by paying almost $800, you need to go see a doctor. 7800GT for $319 combines price and performance period.

Price isnt the point. The point is Nvidia's top card, is faster than ATI's top card, across the board. With SLI, it is a weapon.

ATI's new middle range cards, the X1600s, are complete rubbish, just like the X600 was complete rubbish. Their focus is that card for card they can compete with Nvidia.

Its a mental thing. Just like sales of little baby chevys go up when people know that the top Corvette is faster than Ford's top Mustang. ATI have gone all out on a new design, and they didnt capture the speed crown, they just created a card that could compete for it.

Now, two months after release, ATI can no longer claim that their card mixes it up with the top 7 series. And to spend as much time and money on a top end card that is never going to pay for its own development costs, as most top cards dont, having it beaten with a stick after two months of mediocrity is pathetic.

Its time to launch the R580.

But yeah, the 7800GT is the best price to performance 7 series there is ATM. Unless you're crazy (like me) and think you can handle the power of a GTX. What kind of frame rates could you expect from 2 of the in SLi though? 200+ possibly! Does anyone really want a game that fast? Isn't 60 good enough? or 45?

I've honestly never found a point to go SLI or Crossfire..why? Simple. Would you rather have SLI 6800gts or one 7800gtx? My point exactly, the GTX wins, so for the price you pay for two 7800gtxs, you can hold onto that $$ saved from not buying the second card and use to to purchase a next generation which will obviously kill the previous even with a multi-gpu solution. Having one x1800xt or one 7800gtx is more than enough. I'm not a person who likes to hold back with my machines....go all out is what I say, but when your getting 100fps in CS:S...why would you need more? Its pointless and not worth the money IMHO.

Some people like to show off, it's that simple. Other have an eye for tech beauty. I am both. But i do try to go all out on machines, it's just getting the money together that's the problem. But yeah, 100FPS is enough. If you can get 100FPS in FEAR though, now that's a different story. But the thing about this is that it's 512mb with both faster core and faster memory. But yes, paying out $1600 for an SLI of these really is not worth it. I'd say, at the minimum, for gamers, a 6800GS (the new one released abot a week ago) is the current thing to have. But for just pure class, you have to go with a 7800GT at a minimum. I can only imagine what you could expect from 4 of these in SLI!!! hmmm, 400+ FPS? The price is ridiculously expensive for such a card though but it's like with all new high end cards, they go out of date quite quickly. Then the price comes down and we see even better cards. I expect that very soon, we'll be seeing GPU's with 800Mhz core and 2Ghz memory. No one would ever need anything faster if we did get to that stage which we inevitably will. Then eventually, they'll become old news. The radeon 9500 used to be a good card not too long ago, now look at it compared to the new cards....inferior!

Theroretically, SLI doesnt double your frame rate, thats the other reason I wont go multi-GPU...until I get the extra cards preformance up to par. So having a 7800gtx and getting 60fps constant on FEAR @1280x1024 2aa 4af with max settings then throwing in another doesnt gaurantee you'll get to 120+.

As for The gigabyte board that offers 4x16 PCI -E lanes....lol, yea, not on your life buddy. Would be sweet for a workstation though.
