ATI's midrange is still trash

Well, a mate finally recieved a review sample ATI X1600XT a few days ago, and I just saw the thing when he brought it over. Let me say, if you want to burn $350 without the risk of lung cancer, ATI has the solution.

The X600 was a complete trash card. There is no way around it really. Compared to the 6600GT it was garbage, and there was no point comparing it to the 6200.

Now, after being behind the 8-ball for a considerable length of time, ATI has fought back with another completely substandard, heap of crap video card.

In the same AMD system, Venice 3800+ Abit PCI-E mobo, 1GB Corsair, the 6600GT beat the X1600XT in nearly all tests, bar Half Life 2 and Need for Speed.

Over here, the X1600XT is $350
In contrast, the 6600GT is $170

What a quality job, using extra pipelines, higher clockspeed, a supposedly improved architecture, twice the ram, faster ram, and a new ring bus system, and it still is not any better than an entry level Geforce 6 card.

Someone give ATI a star.

It was a review sample, just in small box in a DHL satchel, but its the card I was underwhelmed by, not the look of it.

When you have a problem you fix it. They had to release the X700 due to the fact that the X600 sucked so much, and then after it also sucked badly, they had to scale down their X800 chips until they FINALLY had something halfway decent in a midrange slot in the form of the X800GTO.

Midrange cards are bread and butter, I just dont get why nobody cares.

Sorry couldn't resist, seems everytime a reviewer wants to keep a manufacturer happy and still not claim trash is "GOLDEN"

They tell me about the great packaging design and how the Box Kicks ass...

But with you...I'm guessing you walk all over the box looking for a return recite...":O}

Not sure if this is true.

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/230 has it beating the 6600Gt in all tests but Doom.

The reason for that would be that they have no clue how to run a Geforce 6. On the testing information page http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/230/4 they use the Nvidia 66.93 retail drivers on the geforce 6600GT.

So, they used 6600GT drivers from mid last year, while using the absolute latest beta release ATI Catalyst drivers.

Man that is common in the benchmark world when they decide to show how good one card is......don't you just hate that?

When reviewers are making comments to impress vendors, the integrity of a test goes down the toilet. The point of reviews is for the vendors to be trying to impress reviewers, not the other way around.

The leaked X1800 review that caused all of that controversy is a perfect example of this. A guy had written unfavourable reviews for ATI cards which were justified, and as a result was snubbed by ATI on the R520 launch. Then he was accused of making up the reviews in their entirity after the R520 turned out to be average at best.

Shame really, the midrange market is where you make your money.
I wonder if ATI's OEM deal with Dell has gone downhill??--Doubt it.

But wasnt the x600 based off the 96xx architecture instead of the x800?
I'm not understanding how ATI goes all out, then fails to capture either high end or midrange crowns... god I hope the R300 wasnt a fluke, ATI needs to produce quality cards to keep competition/advancement and prices down.
